December Birthstone

The December birthstone is the blue topaz, and the alternate is turquoise. Both of these gemstones are available in many colors, but as a rule, the blue shades of both gemstones are regarded as the most appropriate for those born in December.

Facts about Topaz

The word is derived from the Sanskrit word tapas, signifying fire. The name was chosen due to the ancients’ belief that topaz can cool fires. This also led to the belief the stone could calm angry people and soothe anxious nerves.

Ancient civilizations also thought the topaz could cure insomnia, asthma and poor eyesight. The blue topaz was also credited with the ability to turn its wearer invisible if there is danger. It terms of symbolism, topaz represents fidelity, strength, friendship and love.

The Colors of Topaz

The pure topaz has no color. But as the elements in the stone transform, various shades appear, including blue, pink, red, pale green and yellow. The yellow orange type is called the Imperial Topaz. The colorless type looks a bit like a diamond.

The blue color is attained when the stone is heated. This can occur naturally or by artificial means. There are three shades of blue topaz: Swiss Blue, London Blue and Sky Blue. London Blue has the deepest shade. The topaz is found in the US, Brazil, China, Nigeria, Pakistan, Mexico and Sri Lanka.

Turquoise

Turquoise is the preferred December birthstone by other people. The name was derived from Turkey, from where it made its way to Europe. This is one of the very first stones to be used as a form of jewelry. Archaeological evidence shows that it was being used by the ancient Egyptians as jewelry early on in their civilization.

It is regarded as one of the most precious of all opaque jewelry. Since ancient times, it has been a symbol of protection against ill health and evil. Today it is known as a symbol of luck.

The stone is also sacred among many North American Indian tribes and the Tibetans as well. The stone is used in many of their religious ceremonies.

The Indians also believe the stone can provide spiritual knowledge and remove mental confusion. The turquoise can also increase one’s understanding of other people. The stone can also provide wisdom.

Warning: be wary of fakes, which use dyes to mimic the stone’s natural color. If the stone has not yet stabilized, the colors may change if it comes into contact with skin oils. To be sure, wipe the gemstone with a clean towel.

The Colors of Turquoise

It is of course best known for the color that bears its name. However, it is actually available in many shades, including sky blue and greenish blue. The hardness ranges from 5 to 6.

Many of the world’s finest turquoises are mined in Iran and various states in the US, including New Mexico, Arizona and other states in the southwest.
